Choice List of Azimio La Umoja Lawyers lined up for Election Dispute case

Here are some of the veteran lawyers that Raila Odinga has assembled for to overturn William Ruto’s victory:

Kiragu Kimani SC is a partner at Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews. He has over 30 years’ experience in constitutional matters, tax litigation, procurement disputes, commercial litigation, real estate litigation and alternative dispute resolution. He has handled complex energy and tax disputes and represents multinational firms, local firms and departments of the Government of Kenya.

Kiragu has consistently been recognised by various legal directories including Chamber and Partners and IFLR1000 as a leading lawyer in the region. He has previously been awarded the International Law Office Client Choice Award as the best litigation lawyer in Kenya.

Experience
A limited liability company which transmits, distributes and retails electricity to customers throughout Kenya: Acted in a Constitutional Petition challenging the application of tariffs.
H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta: Acted in the two presidential election petitions filed following the presidential election held on 8th August 2017 and the repeat election held on 26th October 2017. The cases revolved around the legitimacy of the election and the election process.
Acted for an unsuccessful bidder in a judicial review proceeding challenging the award of a tender by Kenya’s National Hospital Insurance Fund for provision of life insurance for workers in the public service.
A multinational tobacco company: Acted in a matter challenging the administration, implementation and constitutionality of sections of the Tobacco Control Act, 2007 and Tobacco regulations.
Five major shipping agents: Acting in a tax dispute worth more than three million dollars with the Kenya Revenue Authority
A FMCG company: Acting in obtaining VAT refund payments of over two million dollars.

TOM MACHARIA
  1. Tom Macharia is one of the founders of Mbugwa, Atudo & Macharia Advocates and the Head of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department. He is an advocate of the High Court and a qualified Arbitrator and Mediator
  2. Desterio Oyatsi is an accomplished legal practitioner, an Advocate of the High Court and Managing Partner of Shapley, Barret & Company Advocates, a leading law firm in the country. He is also President Uhuru Kenyatta’s lawyer and also the extended Kenyatta family.
  3. Waweru Gatonye who has over 30 years experience, Gatonye the founder of Waweru Gatonye & Co. Advocates is widely regarded as a “high class and outstanding lawyer” in the field of commercial litigation. He graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1974 with L.L.B (Honours).
  4. Paul Mwangi who was Raila’s coalition advisor in the Grand Coalition government. He succeeded Miguna Miguna as Raila’s legal advisor in January 2012.
  5. Jackson Awele who was Admitted in 2010, Awele is a qualified Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over nine years’ experience in dispute resolution practice. He was instructed as a pupil at Kaplan & Stratton and upon admission to the bar started his practice of law at the said firm and later at Oraro & Co from where he left to found his current private practice.
  6. James Orengo, a Kenyan lawyer, a well known human rights activist and a prominent politician who is the governor-elect for Siaya county. He is also one of the few Kenyan lawyers who have attained the professional grade of Senior counsel in the legal field, a title that he earned under former president Mwai Kibaki. Orengo was elected as an MP for the Ugenya Constituency as a KANU candidate in a by-election in 1980, making him the youngest MP in Kenya at the time, at age 29. In 2019, Orengo was appointed by Uhuru and Raila as part of the task force team to implement Building Bridge Initiative (BBI).
  7. Okong’o Omogeni, a man who got re-elected as Nyamira senator through the August 9 elections. He was elected as Nyamira senator on August 8, 2017 on an ODM party ticket. The lawmaker served as the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president between 2007 and 2010. He previously chaired the defunct Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission Advisory Board.
  8. Tom Ojienda Ojienda is the Kisumu senator-elect. The senior counsel is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a distinguished law career and vast experience in legal matters spanning over 25 years. He is one of the few Kenyan lawyers who have attained the distinguished professional grade of Senior Counsel in the legal field. He is the Founder and President of The Professor Tom Ojienda Foundation, and the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Charitable Trust.
  9. Ben Shihanya Sihanya is a legal scholar, public intellectual, professor-in-residence, researcher, advocate, consultant, mentor and poet at the University of Nairobi Law School. He was educated at the University of Nairobi Law School, University of Warwick and Stanford Law School where he obtained his JSD (PhD). Sihanya has served as Dean of Law and as Chair of the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Nairobi Law School.
  10. Pheroz Nowrjee Along the court corridors, he is often described as a soft-spoken, brilliant legal mind and humble. One of the cases which shaped his life as he followed his dad AR Kapila to court was Mau Mau Lari massacre trials in Githunguri in 1953. His father was defence attorney. Pherozee was called as a Barrister at Lincoln’s Inn in 1965, and then as an advocate in Kenya in 1967. One of the many moments in his practice of law that made him proud is the Raila presidential election petition of 2017, where the Supreme Court nullified the election results for failure to comply with the constitution.
  11. Philip Murgor Born to a provincial commissioner, Charles Murgor, on July 4, 1961, Philip takes pride in his good education. He says his legal acumen, which he put to use while serving as State prosecutor between 2003 and 2005, helped the government recover billions of shillings lost in the Goldenberg scandal. While leaving his position as a State prosecutor in May 2005, Murgor said he needed more time to “raise his family”. Philip is a holder of Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Law from the University of Nairobi.
  12. Otiende Amollo The Rarieda MP-elect is an accomplished Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He previously served as one of nine experts in the Committee of Experts that drafted and delivered the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and is the former Chairperson of the Commission on Administrative Justice (Office of the Ombudsman) of the Republic of Kenya.
