Kevin Kangethe, a murder suspect, was apprehended on Tuesday in Parklands, Nairobi, after an extensive manhunt.
The following day, he appeared before the Milimani Chief Magistrate Court, where he was granted 30 days of custody to facilitate the completion of extradition procedures.
Kangethe is accused of committing first-degree murder in the United States. Specifically, he is alleged to have brutally killed Margaret Mbitu in Massachusetts on October 31, 2023, by repeatedly stabbing her in the face and neck.
After the heinous act, he left her lifeless body inside a locked vehicle at a parking garage in Boston Logan International Airport.
It is believed that Kangethe and Mbitu were previously in a relationship, but the suspect turned against her during a trip to Lowell.
The United States Embassy issued a Diplomatic Note, leading to the collaboration between the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the Office of the Inspector General.
Together, they worked with American law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the fugitive. With the court granting extradition orders and 30 days of custody for processing, the case will be mentioned on March 4, 2024, at Milimani Law Courts.
