Presidential aspirant Mukhisa Kituyi was Saturday 25th September crowned Bukusu leader and spokesman in a function at his home.
Mukhisa was handed the community’s stool of power in the ceremony where a handful of elders equally endorsed his presidential bid.
He was also handed the unique chair, shawl, hat, and armband signifying him as the community’s chosen son to champion the region’s interests.
Former President Moi in 1978 was the last holder of the stool, with the Bukusu tradition dictating that it cannot be handed over to another leader in the lifetime of the last initiate.
Also present were Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua and Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana are among notable figures.
“Elders have found it appropriate to organise an event for the installation in consultation with all the other clans of the Bukusu and other Luhya community,” Mukhisa said.
“Community leaders are giving a statement on behalf of the Mulembe Nation that they see what I represent in their interest as a community.”
The move stands to create a standoff in the political scene in the region faced with unity challenges following the similar bid by Amani leader Musalia Mudavadi.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya among other leaders from the region is a die hard supporter of ODM leader Raila Odinga while others are backing DP William Ruto.
The ceremony, though more cultural, is seen to mark the beginning of a political cause as the President Uhuru Kenyatta succession race hots up.
Mukhisa, who has been in talks with various leaders, appears to be solidifying his base around the Martha and Kivutha axis under the Muungano wa Mageuzi flag.
