President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday banned the movement by road, rail or air in and out of the Nairobi metropolitan area with effect from monday 6th 2020. He also announced that 16 new coronavirus cases had been confirmed raising the number to 158.
The head of state addressing the nation at State House, said the decsion is aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus to other parts of the country since 82% of Kenya’s reported cases have been recorded in Nairobi Metropolitan Area.The President in his directive banned movement in and out of three counties on the Coastal strip – Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa – where an additional 14% of the country’s cases have been recorded.
Applauding the Health Ministry for the great work in combating the disease, he pointed to the fact that the ministry has zeroed in on the 4 Red-zone areas for the virus prompting the National Security Council to sanction new additional measures.
“The cessation of all movement by road, rail or air in and out of in Nairobi, Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa counties.”
“The cessation of movement within the Nairobi metropolitan area for 21 days with effect from 7pm, Monday, April 6.”
“The cessation of movement within the counties of Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa shall be for an initial containment period of 21 days with effect from 7pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. In the intervening period, movement in and out of the Coastal strip shall be limited.” He said
the Nairobi designated area is recognized as part of Nairobi, part of Kiambu town in Ndenderu, up to Athi River including Katani, part of Kajiado including Kitengela.
Any person, motorcycles, scooters, vehicles, vessels, railway wagons or aircraft shall not be allowed in the Nairobi Metropolitan area, Kilifi, Kwale or in Mombasa.
“Any cargo-carrying vehicles or vessels shall be assigned a single driver and designated assistance whom in whichever case shall not exceed three persons,” he stated.
